Welcome to Hylian Shield,
At this site we do something called Role-Playing also known as RPing.
I am TPR and I am here to show you just how to play, that way you will not be too confused about how to RP and you will soon be able to jump in and play with the best.
When you create your character, you want to make a mental picture. Think of his or her personality, their choice of weapons, how they interact with other people etc.
If/when your character is accepted, you can try RPing with other people on these forums.
Here, I will show you some good ways, and some bad ways to RP.
As well as some tips.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bad ways:
Bob entered the dungeon and killed every1
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Good examples:
Phantom sensed that the air was growing thicker, as if the forest itself was warning them to turn back now.
But as he turned to see the way out, a large door lined with spines crashed down with a loud
*CLANG!!!*
His charge, Azul, and the Deku Child wipped around to see what happened, and Phantom just ducked out of sight.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TIPS:
1. If you are talking out of character, please put either
*** or ***((( or and variation , before and after your post, that way people know if your character is speaking, or if you are asking them how many enemies there are in whatever area you are in.
2. Generally posts look better if you capitalize and punctuate correctly, trust me, the extra mile makes it worth while.
3. Seperate your post into paragraphs please, it makes it so that there isnt a huge text wall which is hard to read. Paragraphs make it so it is easier to read and understand. They should be seperated like this post is.
3. The more detail you can add, the better
4. HAVE FUN WITH IT!!!
Just remember, this is just like a video game, except that YOU decide what happens, and where your adventure takes you.
5. If you are RPing with multiple people, it is best to establish a system of who posts when, that way 3 people aren’t all defeating the same enemy at the same time.
6. Try to write in third person, it makes it easier for other people to join in
Example of third person[Added by Syyx]:
Syyx stared at the large rock blocking the entrance to the dark depths of the cavern. He pondered for a way to get passed the mighty boulder.
Bad Example:
I stared at the large rock blocking the entrance to the dark depths of the cavern I pondered for a wat to get passed the mighty boulder.

Also, if you ever have any questions, feel free to either post here, or pm Bitoko, or myself, and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

Starting Your Quest
Many new members always ask: How do I start? or Where do I start?
The truth is, many of you probably have not RPed before. If you have, thats great, then you probably dont need this RP, this is for the ones who are having trouble.
Right now, I am going to answer the easiest question: Where do I start?
The Answer: Anywhere in the land of Hyrule, or if you desire, Termina.
Im really not to concerened with where your adventure begins, its your choice, you can role play the way that you see fit. Just pick an area in Hyrule (or Termina) and make your quest come to life.
Now for the next question: How do I start?
This is a harder question to answer, cause it all depends on your character's story. Depending on what you put as your backstory, you can start out your story in many different ways. If you were abandoned by your parents while you were young, or they died and you never knew their names, you can start out by trying to find something out about them(Credits to Syyx). Remember, role playing is a combination of a video game, and writing a story. You control what goes on around you (excluding other's players actions) and you can tell it however you want.
One thing to remember, however. DO NOT use items, places, or terms, that do not exist in the Zelda Universe. Things like shampoo, popcorn, cars, lightsabers, guns, razors, televisions, iPods, and other items are not alloud, and you will be warned for using them. It is not "funny" when you include these sort of things, it is frowned upon here.
Now back to the "How do I start?" Using the example of the lost parents, you could start out at Kakariko Village, as an example, and decide to go to Dampe's Graveyard to learn of your parents death(More credits to Syyx). Or you could travel to Hyrule Castle and look at the Library (you would have to post this in Hyrule Castle town, there is no "Library" forum) to look up their names. Just start your quest out according to your back story.
Your story doesnt all have to do with your back story either, you could start out looking for your parents but meet up with someone else and have the story completely change, it is all up to you. You are the writer here, you decide what happens.
One last thing, you cannot decide what happens to other characters. This is called "god-modding" and is highly frowned upon at Hylian Shield. It is not fair to say that, for example: Gonthar Posts "Syyx decided to jump into the water, while down at the bottom he found a pricless gem. 'Give it to me' sid Gonthar. 'Ok' said Syyx, handing it over." That is a good example of god-modding, not a serious one though.
Again, if you have any questions feel free to PM me.
First thing I need to make clear is, please put effort into your posts and make them as detailed as possible. It is better to have a well detailed RP going on then a couple of sentences a post. Here is an example of what I am talking about:
This is what I do not want you to do:
Gonthar walked into the bar and desided to get a drink.
That, I am affraid, is terrible Role Playing. You need to be more descriptive, here is a better example:
The air coming from the Inn's doorway was warm, the orange glow leaked softly from the opening. Gonthar entered the Inn to find it filled with people, noisily talking amongst themselves. It had been a long time since Gonthar had come down from Death Mountain into Kakariko Village, but the change was nice.
"Ah, Gonthar!" said a man from behind the counter. "Good to see you again old chap. What can I get you?"
"Goro.. Just the usual drink, Lon Lon Milk," replied Gonthar."
"Very well," replied the bartender as he bustled into the kitchen to fetch a bottle of mild. "Here you are."
Gonthar sat down on a stool next to the counter and grabbed his bottle. Taking in a few gulps he turned to the barkeeper and began to discuss his latest dealings up in Goron City. They talked for hours before Gonthar decided it was time to go to bed.
The Innkeeper showed him a room and Gonthar, ignoring the bed, curled into a ball and fell asleep.
Please try to make your Role Playing descriptive. The above is a good example of being descriptive, instead of saying "Gonthar walked into the bar and desided to get a drink" you can go into much more detail, describing the story to a much greater level.
The same goes for doing battles, I dont want any "Gonthar stabbed the spider and it died." You MUST be descriptive. You will not enjoy your experience here until you fully understand Role Playing.
For extra help, feel free to PM any member that you think is doing a good job RPing. I am sure TPR would be glad to help you whenever he can. You can even ask me, Bitoko, I will be glad to help you as well.
Well there you go, thats it for now, until I make some more tutorials.
Have Fun,
~Bitoko
